South African food awards
South African food awards provide a good barometer of where and what you should be eating when you visit our country. Serious foodie adventurers don’t only seek out top-notch restaurants. They want to know where the locals go, where the best food shops and markets are, and where to try out regional delicacies.
Conducted annually, the Eat In Produce Awards celebrate produce that’s local, fresh, seasonal and sustainable. Products pour in from around the country and, after much nibbling, debating, sampling and scoring by a team of food experts and chefs, the winning products are announced. At the same time, the public is asked to nominate their favourite local product or food hero. The result, Eat In, is a countrywide food directory, of South Africa’s best and most innovative produce that’s as scrumptious as it is useful.
The Eat Out DSTV Food Network Restaurant Awards are the big restaurant awards in South Africa. These awards highlight the top 10 restaurants in South Africa, although their selection of the Top 20 restaurants is always a good guideline if you are looking for fantastic restaurant fare. The restaurants in the Western Cape generally take the honours, and the town of Stellenbosch in the winelands continues to have numerous restaurants on the Top 20 list.
The South African Olive Oil Awards is another top local food award in South Africa, where products are judged against international standards, but the product is 100% homemade. Many of these same oils have won gold medals internationally.
