Sporting activities in KwaZulu-Natal

1Running The Comrades Marathon

The Comrades Marathon - run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg over 90km - is known as the greatest road race in the world. Each year the route alternates, with 'down' runs to the coast followed by 'up' runs to Pietermaritzburg. The route winds along secondary roads and attracts thousands of international and local runners every year.

2Surfing

The KwaZulu-Natal coastline is hugely popular among the surfing fraternity. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are conducive to all-day surfing at favoured surf spots such as New Pier, Dairy Beach, Baggies, Ballito, Westbrook, Scottburgh, Umhlanga and Cave Rock.

3Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is a popular sport in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in Sodwana Bay and along the Elephant Coast, where the water promises excellent visibility. Aliwal Shoal off Umkomaas offers some of the most demanding and exciting scuba diving in the world. Here one can dive with tiger sharks, ragged-tooth sharks, manta rays and dolphins.

4Swimming

Swimming is a very popular sport in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and the Indian Ocean is a great place to start. For competitive swimmers an event not to be missed is the Midmar Mile (in the Midlands) – the world’s largest open water swimming event held in February every year. For fun days in the water for the kids, head for uShaka Marine's Wet 'n Wild water theme park.

5Kite Surfing

Durban’s fantastic sandy beaches and robust winds make it a popular destination for kite-surfing, although it must be said that the pastime is enjoyed all along the more open beaches of the Dolphin Coast and the Hibiscus Coast too (especially during holiday season).

6Canoeing

Both canoeing and kayaking are popular pastimes: on the ocean, on dams, lakes and even in rivers. What separates the men from the boys is the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon, a challenging event which takes place over a period of three days in January each year along the Msundusi River system from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

7Hiking in the Drakensberg Mountain Range

The Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park is a favourite hiking destination. Its magnificent panoramic vistas hide thousands of hills and valleys that are waiting to be explored. Hikes over 3 to 5 days are popular here and there's also swimming and tubing down the rivers, cycling and camping to add to the excitement.

8Deep Sea Fishing

While some might argue that deep sea fishing is not exactly a sport, in the same vein as cricket or tennis, purists believe there’s loads of sportsmanship involved in catching a big one! Deep sea fishing outfits launch from Durban, Warner Beach, Umkomaas, south along the Hibiscus Coast and along the Elephant Coast in St Lucia and Sodwana Bay.

9Tennis

KwaZulu-Natal has a long history of lawn tennis (the KZN Lawn Tennis Association was founded here in 1902). There are a number of tennis courts in and around the city (the Westridge Park Tennis Stadium is a favourite for celebrity matches), and a number of holiday resorts also have tennis courts on offer for a casual game, as do most Drakensberg resorts.

10Fitness Centres

if you’re travelling and want to keep up with your fitness regime, there are a number of gymnasium and fitness centres in and around KwaZulu-Natal. Both Virgin Active and Planet Fitness gymnasiums are represented in this part of the world
